Alice Mufrej: The People of Suwayda Have Carried the Burdens of All Syrians
Alice Mufrej, a member of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, took part in a seminar titled “An Eye on the Peaceful Civil Movement in Suwayda” held on Saturday, August 17, in Berlin, Germany. The event marked the anniversary of the peaceful movement in Suwayda, which represents the collective will of the people of Suwayda and all of Syria for freedom, dignity, justice, and the establishment of a democratic, pluralistic civil state, through the support and implementation of UN Resolution 2254.
Mufrej stated, “The people of Suwayda have carried the burdens of all Syrians across the entire Syrian territory. They have demanded justice, an end to corruption, and the dominance of security apparatuses. They have also called for the implementation of UN Resolution 2254, stating that there are no humanitarian solutions to the Syrian crisis; the solution must be political. The situation cannot improve economically without addressing the root causes of the tragedy and transitioning from a regime of oppression, extremism, and terrorism to one of democracy, freedom, and pluralism.”
Mufrej emphasized that the Syrian Negotiation Commission is closely connected to the movement and maintains constant communication with its representatives. She affirmed the commission’s full support for the movement, describing it as a symbol for free Syrians.
Participants shared their testimonies and experiences, discussing the trajectory of the peaceful movement in Suwayda, the challenges it faces, the significant sacrifices made in the pursuit of a better future, the movement’s future prospects, and ways to support it.
The seminar included contributions via direct communication from inside Suwayda by Basma Al-Aqbani (political activist and member of the political committee elected by the Civil Peaceful Movement in Suwayda), Salam Nabwani (educator and civil activist), Marwan Hamza (political and human rights activist), and Jamal Al-Shufi (writer and researcher). From Berlin, in addition to Mufrej, participants included Zaidoun Al-Zoubi (researcher in governance and identity issues) and Yahya Al-Ous (journalist), with the seminar moderated by Karim Suleiman and Samer Fahd.
