During a symposium entitled “Brussels Conference in the Balance” held by Mukarabat Dialogue Forum on Friday, SNC President, Dr. Bader Jamous said that the Syrian Negotiation Commission’s engagement in the Brussels VIII Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria was a chance for the SNC as a political negotiation entity to affirm to the international community that the Syrian issue is primarily political and that a political solution based on international resolution must be pursued. He further expressed his reassurance at the coordination and harmonized joint work between the SNC and Syrian civil society organizations during the conference.
During the symposium in which Mr. Mounzer Al Sallal, head of the Stabilization Support Unit, also participated and which Mr. Hisham Askeef moderated, the SNC President discussed the significance of the SNC’s participation for the first time in the Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria saying it was a significant accomplishment which was made possible by the joint efforts made by the SNC and Syrian CSOs.
Brussels Conference
He explained that the SNC and Syrian CSOs have exerted huge efforts this year in their meetings with politicians from Europe, regional and Arab states and the USA, in order to reaffirm the importance of reprioritizing the Syrian file despite the disregard it has witnessed at the international level due to major international crises such as the Ukrainian war, the war of aggression on Gaza as well as the economic crises which are wreaking havoc in many countries and the disagreements among members of the Security Council over major issues.
Dr. Jamous pointed out that after lengthy and serious negotiations with the European Union, the SNC managed to convince the EU to introduce a first session to the agenda tackling the political process based on UNSCR 2254. This was important to communicate this issue to the European ministerial meeting which is going to take many decisions including on the funds allocated to assist Syrians next year.
Joint Efforts
Jamous also revealed that the SNC was working with several Syrian CSOs, local actors and Syrian diaspora communities on several important issues. On another the level, he said, the SNC was seeking to develop international, diplomatic and political relations with the international community and to work at the level of the United Nations for the international organization to carry out its responsibilities and call for an international conference to find binding mechanisms for the implementation of international resolutions particularly Geneva Communique and UNSCR 2254 as the Syrian regime would not accept a political solution unless it is compelled to. Otherwise, the regime would continue to stall and evade the obligations it has and continue to kill more Syrians.
