SNC President, Dr. Bader Jamous, along with an SNC delegation met on Monday a delegation from the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs including Mr. Lionel Mazas and Head of Egypt and the East Section in the French MFA, Maria Wadjinny. We discussed the current political situation in Syria.
The SNC delegation comprised SNC members Alise Mofrej, Ibrahim al-Jabawi and Tarek al-Kurdi. We discussed France’s firm stance condemning the Syrian regime and supporting the right of Syrians to peace, justice and stability and insisting on the political solution and the implementation of UNSCR 2254.
Dr. Jamous and the SNC delegation discussed with Mr. Mazas and Ms. Wadjinny the SNC’s efforts outside the Security Council to find additional means to put pressure on the Syrian regime and its backers to put an end to their evasion of a political solution. They pointed out that it was important for France to move at the European level as well as the level of the Security Council to support these endeavors and find binding mechanisms to implement international resolutions.
The discussion also touched on the peaceful movement in Suewida and demanded states to stop the regime from using violence or force against civilians against the backdrop of ongoing security reinforcements the regime is sending to the governorate.
Both sides also tackled the humanitarian suffering and the dire health, relief and humanitarian conditions in Syria highlighting the importance of cross-border humanitarian assistance. They also discussed what could be done to improve the situation especially in the north west of Syria in addition to the imperative of continuing to push the issue of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons in regime prisons and demanding by all means their release and disclosure of their fate.
The French diplomats reiterated France’s support of the legitimate and just demands of Syrians and its firm stance against the Syrian regime. They stressed that France supports all those who committed crimes against the Syrian people and is committed to UNSCR 2254 as the only pathway for a Syrian-led UN-facilitated political process which protects the lives of all Syrians.
