President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Badr Jamous, met with the German special envoy to Syria, Mr. Stefan Schneck, on Monday to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian political process, Germany’s firm stance on a political solution, and the prospects for advancing the political process.
During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the Commission’s regular session in Geneva, Jamous provided an overview of the Commission’s international efforts to revitalize negotiations hindered by the Syrian regime. He emphasized the responsibility of the European Union and the UN Security Council in this regard, underscoring the need for binding mechanisms to prevent the regime from evading its obligations under UN resolutions, particularly UN Resolution 2254.
The German envoy reaffirmed that the political process outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254 is the only path to achieving sustainable peace and economic development in Syria. He stressed that Germany’s stance against normalizing relations with the regime, lifting sanctions, or engaging in reconstruction efforts will remain unchanged without practical and tangible steps by the Syrian regime towards a political solution.
Schneck also highlighted Germany’s ongoing humanitarian, relief, and educational aid to those in need in Syria, and emphasized Germany’s commitment to continuing this aid to alleviate the suffering of millions of Syrians.
