In the end of Brussels VIII Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria, SNC President, Dr. Bader Jamous, met on Tuesday with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Ethan Goldrich, to discuss the latest political development in Syria.

Both sides engaged in an in-depth discussion on the importance of pushing the political solution in Syria forward based on international resolutions and through the full and strict implementation of UNSCR 2254 as the sole pathway which could restore stability and security in Syria and end the suffering of the Syrian people.

The SNC President reiterated that it was important that the USA and the international community continue to use all possible tools to impose sanctions on the Syrian regime and activate mechanisms to hold it accountable for the crimes it has committed against Syrians. He asserted that sanctions acted as a deterrence sending a message to those backing the regime in its war against its own people and that it was necessary to strictly address any breach of those sanctions.

He further called for the US to put pressure on the Syrian regime allies in order to put an end for its evasion of the political process and find mechanisms to compel the regime to take tangible and genuine steps towards that end.

Mr. Goldrich said his country supported a just and comprehensive political solution in Syria in accordance with international resolutions. The USA, he said, supported a Syrian-led UN-facilitated political process towards the full implementation of UNSCR 2254. He stressed that the US position was unwavering in terms of imposing more sanctions to cut out the Syrian regime and its backers and communicate a message to the states which try to normalize relations with the Syrian regime indicating that these attempts were to no avail as long as the Syrian regime continues to evade the political solution. He said the US would address any violation of sanctions on the Syrian regime and investigate any state activities that are breach the sanctions scheme.
