August 6 2024
The President of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Dr. Badr Jamous, held a meeting with the head of the European Union delegation to Syria, Ambassador Dan Stoenescu, in Istanbul. Dr. Jamous expressed his gratitude to Mr. Dan for the efforts he made during his tenure and the support he provided to the Syrian cause and Syrians. He affirmed that the Commission continues to work by all means to advance the Syrian political process as stipulated by international resolutions.
In the meeting, which was attended by Commission member Dima Moussa, Dr. Jamous discussed the current international political activities of the Commission and its short-term plans. He also emphasized the importance of continued European support for Syrians on political, diplomatic, and humanitarian levels, and the futility of normalizing relations with the Syrian regime. He expressed disappointment with some countries that have taken initial steps in this direction.
Dr. Jamous highlighted the importance of reactivating the Constitutional Committee and resuming its meetings in Geneva as per UN resolutions. He warned of the dangers of the Syrian regime’s non-compliance with international resolutions, particularly the Geneva Communique and Resolution 2254, which is the sole gateway to achieving the legitimate demands of Syrians for a state of citizenship, freedom, and justice.
For his part, Ambassador Stoenescu, who is concluding his duties, emphasized the urgent need to enhance efforts to advance the political process. He reiterated the European Union’s steadfast support for UN Security Council Resolution 2254 to achieve a safe and sustainable political solution to the Syrian issue.
The European envoy thanked the President of the Commission and its leadership for their cooperation and diligent work to push the political process forward. He pointed out the European Union’s conviction that the only way forward is a genuine political solution that addresses the root causes of the Syrian conflict, reaffirming the EU’s support for the Syrian people.
